Health & Nutrition

We have a positive approach to keeping children healthy at Wellybobs Day Nursery.  This is not only about freshly prepared and cooked meals and healthy snacks and drinks, but actively promoting awareness and understanding of healthy habits. We have a fantastic nursery cook, Margaret, who produces mouth-watering meals the children love! Walks to the park, music and dance, outdoor learning and physical play are just some of the other ways we teach children about being healthy at Wellybobs.

There are no pre-prepared or ready meals offered to our nursery children.  Each meal is freshly prepared and cooked daily by Margaret. This enables us to cater easily for most dietary requirements. Below is a typical week’s menu which is displayed on the parent’s notice board.

Meet our Chef, Margaret

My name is Margaret and I worked at Wellybobs since on day one, in May 2011.
I have worked in the catering industry for over 35 years, previously cooking for the elderly for about 15 years.
I have City and Guild Certificate in Cookery for the Catering Industry, Part One and Two, Level Three Food Safety and Hygiene for Supervisors and Food Allergy Awareness Training, as well as training in healthy foods, nutrition and special diets.
I have extra nursery qualifications including Paediatric First Aid, Level Two Safeguarding Children, Level Two Makaton and Fire Warden Training.

My role at Wellybobs has evolved so much over my 12 years, since day one especially regarding allergies, intolerance and special diets, there have been so many changes regarding legislation especially in packaged food and menus all allergen information must be provided. I have to make checks on food coming into nursery and if a replacement has been sent how it affects our allergen information.

I changed how we plan our menus a couple of years ago instead of being set to a three or four weekly menu we now have a rolling menu, your child will get a wider variety of meals planning the menu this way.
All allergen information is given on our menu and all meals are adapted to meet your child’s dietary requirements.

I cater for all dietary needs and intolerances and work closely with parents to ensure that children do not receive any foods that might cause them to have an allergic reaction. We ask for specific dietary requests, such as dairy-free, coeliac disease and other rare food related medical issues, to be made in writing each year to keep our information up to date. We have trained all our staff on food related allergens. We use colour coded plates based on the child’s needs to ensure that staff that the correct meal is provided for each individual case, and that the children themselves are aware of which meal belongs to them.
We encourage parents with a child with any special dietary requirements to have an informal chat with me alongside your child’s key worker or room supervisor during their settling in period to form a good relationship and understanding of their needs.

We encourage children with special needs, including educational needs and disabilities, be included in meal and snack times (unless otherwise indicated) with the other children in our setting.
Children with complex needs are supported and may have additional requirements (such as having their food prepared as a particular texture to enable them to eat) or may need support to eat (such as specially designed plates or cutlery) or need staff to feed them if they are unable to feed themselves.

At Wellybobs Day Nursery, we have quite a few children and parents with a nut or peanut allergy so we have a strict “NO NUTS” policy.
